The original is back! Carl Finlow started the 2020Vision story alongside Ralph Lawson at a deserted farmhouse studio outside Leeds in 1995. He was the studio genius behind the production of the first 20 titles and highly influential in creating the 2020 sound that we have come to know so well. Finlow created his own solo project - Random Factor at the farmhouse and became the first 2020artist to take his show live on the road and the first to complete a full studio album. 2020Vision hit as a label immediately, quickly earning props from Derrick May, Stacey Pullen, Derrick Carter, Carl Craig and Danny Tenaglia. Alter Ego and an early Playhouse label were so blown away by the output of the label that they dedicated an entire night to it in their Wild Pitch club in Frankfurt where they played 2020Vision records all night. Everyone commented that it was the studio sound that was impressing and this was down to Carl Finlow. Random Factor was cited as being a major inspiration for Ivan Smagghe as he developed his Black Strobe project in Paris and Trevor Jackson personally wrote to us to say the same. It was then that Random Factor dropped "Broken Mirror". This track became an iconic start to making the 80s fashionable again pre-dating the new wave of acts digging into that era by years. It became our biggest hit on 2020Vision for many years and ended getting licensed to over 25 compilations. Finlow followed it up with the justifiable honour of creating the 100th release for 2020Vision entitled "Convergence". This stepped up his album credentials again and cemented his place as a highly influential electronic artist. Finlow went on to record for Warp, Playhouse, Soma and Get Physical.
So all that's history anyway, where the hell has he been for the last three years? Well on tour in Paris with Lawson he ended up at an after show party on a boat on the Seine where they were serving, shall we say, a rather potent punch. He met a young lady named Coco at the party and Lawson travelled home alone. Finlow arrived back in Leeds a week later sporting a "Porn Star" tee shirt as a gift from Paris ;) It was only a matter of time before Finlow had sold up lock stock and two smoking studio barrels and moved across the pond and a short while later the patter of tiny electronic feet could be heard. Finlow admits it takes a while to get used to a new city and culture and he still hasn't learnt the language! He also found incredible inspiration in the city and a new "Joie De Vivre" in his writing. The result is that we now have the next Random Factor album in the safe at 2020HQ and trust me it is BLINDING! Finlow again shows his history and pedigree as well as his refusal to jump on band wagons and trends by producing timeless electronic music inspired more by Kraftwerk, Yello, Stockhausen, Tomita, Prince, Sakamoto, Brian Eno and The White Noise than by what is playing this summer at DC10. But we are only going to give you a taster this time and give you one cut which is "Beaten". Already used as the last track on Ralph Lawson's recent 2020Vision compilation, this jerky sporadic groove gives a nod to the forefathers while holding down a beat anyone would be proud of. If there is one producer that you could compare it to I would say it would be Mathew Jonson. The single comes complete with remixes from Art Of Tones, fresh after last year's huge "Praise", this mystery outfit has now signed to 2020Vision and this is the first of many bombs coming your way from them. AOT take the track directly to the dancefloor and produce two versions that I would personally love to hear at 9am on Sunday at the Panorama bar in Berlin! Random Factor is back, please don your respective hats.
