Phonogenic

Tuomas Salmela has a time-honoured place in the 2020 family as the artist who lives in the coldest place and, probably more importantly, one of the first to be signed outside original visionaries Ralph Lawson, Carl Finlow and Huggy. With winter temperatures of
-30°C and just a couple (or so) hours of daylight in his hometown of Oulu in Northern Finland, the obvious choice for a young lad like Tuomas was to get into music and a nice warm studio. Before sending us a demo tape back in 1998, the best-known cultural exports of Oulu were the Air Guitar World Championships and Mieskuoro Huutajat (also known as Screaming Men – an internationally famous shouting choir comprised of 30 men who enjoy delivering renditions of Finnish patriotic songs - loudly), but since his first 2020 release, Quality Cat, Tuomas Salmela has taken his rightful place alongside these important elements of the city’s obviously diverse music scene.

After this first release, Tuomas began to develop his Phonogenic sound exclusively for 2020, producing his more firing, electronic funk excursions under this guise. Having built up a wide fan-base over the last 10 years as Phonogenic and other aliases, our funky Finn has successfully run his own label Phonogenic Audio since 2005, worked for other top-notch labels and released collaborations with long-time friend Jori Hulkkonen as Discemi.
